What is Gender Affirming Therapy? Gender Affirming therapy takes the therapeutic stance of affirming an individual’s gender identity and not trying to “repair,” it. Individuals who identify as Trans, and want to focus on Gender Affirming Therapy, may seek out this type of care.
Gender Affirming Therapy aids in psychological, social, emotional, and physical needs in which a person may be uncomfortable with aspects of their gender, body, or experiencing Gender Dysphoria. Gender Affirming Therapy is also for individuals who may question their gender, are seeking gender affirming medical and/or nonmedical interventions and support, and do not identify with their designated sex at birth.
Our clinicians incorporate gender affirming therapy techniques through understanding the client’s history, assessing together if the individual is experiencing Gender Dysphoria, using correct pronouns and name, creating a safe space for processing and understanding, linking individuals to social supports, resources, healthcare providers, allowing for diversity, and integrating W-PATH standards of care. Gender Affirming Therapists will implement information regarding gender identity, diversity, and dysphoria, transgender rights, new research relevant to gender and help guide with gender in any situation in life.
